Belmar's Holiday Lights, Lakewood, Colorado.

Camera - Canon EOS 5D Mark II
ISO - 400
Shutter - 1/10 sec.
F/stop - 16
Lens - 70/200 zoom
Note - tripod and cable release used for this shot.

Challenge.
I got a job to photograph Belmars's Holiday Lights.

Solution.
The firsts thing I did was check out the area before the shoot date. Two streets and the area around a ice skating rink had the best decorations. It was a nice day when I went back for the shoot. Knowing that real nice pictures are available right after sunset, I got there an hour early, took a few pictures and then set up my gear. Right after sunset the sky turned a light purple, just before the decorations came on. To get everything in focus, I used a f/stop of 16. This shoot went real well.

Denver City and County Building's Holiday Lights, Colorado

"X Shot" information.
Camera - Canon EOS 5D Mark II
ISO - 200
Shutter - 11 sec.
F/stop - 22
Lens - 24/70 zoom
Note - tripod and cable release were used for this shot.

Challenge.
I have been wanting to photograph The Denver City and County Building's holiday lights, with snow on the ground, for some time now. Last Wednesday the snow was there but it was below zero, so I passed. Thursday night would work, the snow would still be there. Arriving just before sunset, I had a big surprise, Friday was the day of the big Parade of Lights and bleachers were in front of my subject.

Solution.
To make the bleachers not so noticeable, I would have to shoot from a distance or go right up next to the building. Another problem was most of the snow was all messed up with footprints. Going about 50 yards in front of the structure, took care of the bleacher problem but the snow was still a mess. After shooting for awhile, I now wanted to find a section of clear snow, for my foreground. The location I found also had some trees and lampposts. By using a large depth-of-field setting (f/22), everything in my photo would be in focus.

Winter Scenes from Summit County, Colorado.

"X Shot" information.
Camera - Canon EOS 5D Mark II
ISO - 400
Shutter - 1/500 sec
F/stop - 11
Lens - 70/200 zoom

Challenge.
Go up to Summit County and get some winter scenics.

Solution.
My plan was to drive up the Dillon area and take a drive around the reservoir. There was some new snow, not a lot, but enough to help any photo.  After capturing a number of images, I found myself on Loveland Pass, right near A-Basin, at sunset. The sky was a rich blue, as the last of the sun made the mountain tops glow. To get a correct exposure, I zoomed into the bright spot, took a reading, than with out changing anything, created my image.  This allowed the warm glow on the peaks, to come through in my photo.
