Evergreen Studio Tour, Evergreen, Colorado.

Last weekend I took part in the Evergreen Studio Tour, which had 34 artists open their studio doors to visitors for a weekend. Besides my photography, I paint black and white photos, that I have shot, with oil paints. I only use Q-Tips, that I made out of tooth picks and cotton. This weeks blog will show some of my art work that was on display. I want to thank everyone who visited me and my wife, Pam.
We enjoyed ourself and will take part next year.

Squaw Pass, Evergreen, Colorado.

"X Shot" information.
Camera - Canon EOS 5D Mark II
ISO - 400
Shutter - 1/250 sec.
F/stop - 18
Lens - 70/200 zoom.

LOCATION.
1. Squaw Pass can be found off the Evergreen Parkway.
2. The road loops around and comes out in Idaho Springs.
3. This is a good local trip to view the aspens, avoid weekends if possible.

THE CHALLENGE.
I was going to be really tied up the week before the 2012 Artists of Evergreen Open Door Studios Tour so I wasn't going to have much time to shoot this weeks blog.

SOLUTION.
I decided to go back to Squaw Pass and shoot the same aspen area as last week, just to see what changes had taking place in one weeks time. The color area had increased to about 50% but I noticed areas that had color last week, were now loosing their leaves.  So I believe this section will never be filled with full color this year.

Squaw Pass, Evergreen, Colorado, first fall shoot.

"X Shot" information.
Camera - Canon EOS 5D Mark II
ISO - 400
Shutter - 1/800 sec
F/stop - 8
Lens - 70/200 zoom

LOCATION.
1. Squaw Pass can be reached from the Evergreen Parkway, about a half hour from Denver.
2. This road will loop around and comes out at I-70, in Idaho Springs.
3. Except for this section of aspens, across the valley, only small groups are starting to change.
4. This scenic road becomes a popular aspen viewing route, try to avoid weekends if you can.

THE CHALLENGE.
To find a really nice aspen shot so early in the fall viewing season.

THE SOLUTION.
To increase my chances, I went out to shoot right after a storm came through. This would give me a nice dark sky, with patches of sunlight breaking through. Most of the search only produced small section of turning trees until I spotted this beautiful mountain side. I pulled over and waited for some sun to break out on the trees. While waiting, a guy pulled in next to me, got out and asked me what was I waiting for. I told him, he shrugged shoulders, lifted his I Pad, took a shot and left, is this the future.  The sun hit my subject about ten minutes later, giving me this shot.

Mount Evans, Idaho Spring, Colorado.

"X Shot" information.
Camera - Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III
ISO - 1000
Shutter - 1/5000
F/stop - 4
Lens - 500 mm

LOCATION.
1. Mount Evans is about a one hour drive from Denver.
2. Take the Mount Evans exit out of Idaho Springs.
3. If you want to go up to the top of Mount Evans, you need to do it by Monday. For some reason that  part of the road is closed after the Labor  Day holiday. You can still drive to Summit Lake, until snow
closes the road for the season.

THE CHALLENGE.
I have always got a kick out of how close you can get to the wildlife up here. The animals are use to humans and have no fear of us. To show this, would be my challenge on this shoot.

SOLUTION.
I had to find a photo with a animal and a human, somehow interacting, to make this work. I decided to us my 500 mm lens, this would knock out the back ground and let me shoot from a distance, with out disturbing what was going on. I drove up and down the higher section of the road, seeing wildlife, but no people or seeing people but no animals. Finally it happened, I stopped about 50 yards away and started shooting. A photographer had a mom mountain goat and her baby, right in front of her. It looked like they were posing! If this happens to you, make sure you don't get between the mom and her young one.  This could be dangerous!
