Every year I try to go to Monte Vista and photograph the sandhill migration to the north.
This year I decided to use mostly my 500 mm lens, just to change it up a bit. My "X Shot" came in the early morning, before the sun came up. Noticing a small group of birds roosting, I set up my gear, a tripod and a cable release with my 500 mm lens. With the cranes not moving much yet, I was able to use a slower shutter speed. The cranes stay in Monte Vista Colorado for the month of March, on their way to Idaho.
