Ken Papaleo: X Marks the Shot: March 2016

Colorado - Sandhill Cranes in Monte Vista on their way to Idaho.

"X Shot" information.
Camera - Canon EOS 5D Mark II
ISO - 2000
Shutter - 1/2000 sec.
F/stop - 11
Lens - 500 mm

Went down to Monte Vista last week to photograph the sandhill cranes. They stop there on their way to Idaho. A lot of the fields that use to have winter wheat on them were bone dry. This made it a little more difficult. My main goal was the get some birds in a image with the full moon.  After a couple of days of overcast and real strong winds, which kept the cranes grounded, the weather cleared.  As the moon was setting in the morning, I used my 500 mm lens to stack the birds up with it. I used a high ISO to be able to shoot at a high shutter speed and with a large f/stop, to get birds and moon both in focus.

Colorado - A Vacation at the Beach in Cayucos California.

"X Shot" information.
Camera - Canon Rebel
ISO - 100
Shutter - 1/500 sec.
F/stop - 5.6
Lens - EF-18/55 zoom

My family went on vacation to the beach at Cayucos California last week. Not wanting to be bothered bringing all my camera gear on a plane, I decided to just bring my Canon Rebel with a 18-55 zoom lens. All the photos below were taking with this camera. It was strange not having the assortment of glass available.  My "X Shot" came at day-break, right after a thunder storm past through, producing a rainbow. The light was hitting the ocean waves but no wear else, so I took my readings from those highlights. I love Colorado and all it offers in it's beauty but it was nice to photograph something different.

Nothing like Vacation.

Colorado - Sunrises to Sunsets in Walden Colorado.

"X Shot" information.
Camera - Canon EOS 5D Mark II
ISO - 1600
Shutter - 1/6 sec.
F/stop - 5.6
Lens - 300 f/2.8
Tripod and cable release used.

One of the best places to photograph winter mountain scenes is Walden, Colorado. It has the Park Range to the West, Rabbit Ears Range to the South and to the East are the Medicine Bow and Never Summer Mountains. You don't have to go far to shoot sunrise on one set of mountains and then sunset on another.  I also found a location where I could shoot both east and west, with a 500 mm lens. A good place to stay is the North Park Inn and Suites.
