Challenge.
I finished up my contract work for the month of March and had some time left. There is a place that I have been wanting to check out called Paint Mines Park, so I headed that way. It is west of Colorado Springs in Calhan, Colorado. It's someplace I new very little about.

Solution.
Before I go anywhere, I check it out on the internet and if it is a park of some kind, I call the ranger, to get additional information. I will also check out the weather forecast. When I arrived around midday, it was completely overcast but it was supposed to clear out. After checking out the area, I went and got a room. I had noticed that the park was in a valley, early morning and late afternoon light would both produce nice images. The park was remarkable with bright colors and beautiful rock formations. It was pretty easy getting around, not hard hikes. This place can get pretty hot in the middle of summer and icy in the winter so spring and fall would be the best time to visit.

Army National Guard Training for Wildfires at Chatfield State Park.

"X Shot" information.
Camera - Canon EOS 5D Mark II
ISO - 100
Shutter - 1/80sec.
F/stop - 29
Lens - 70/200 zoom

Challenge.
I hadn't been out for a blog shoot for a couple of weeks, so I headed out. I found myself at Chatfield State Park in Littleton, Colorado. Upon entering the park I noticed helicopter activity in the south east corner. The Army National Guard where undergoing water dropping training. It looked interesting but I had no access and would have to shoot from a distance.

Solution.
The thing that really helped me with this shoot was having all my gear with me, including my 500 mm lens. Using this lens and a 70/200 zoom I was able to get a good variety of images.

A New Piece of Art Work "Ski Fence"

After taking a real nice image, I get a black and white print made. I then use Marshall's Photo Oil Paints, using only QTips that I make out of cotton and toothpicks, to paint parts of the image.
Once it is finished, a high res scan is made and then a limited number of prints are up for sale. Check out more of my paintings by clicking on the "Ken Papaleo" icon on the top right corner of this photo blog and then click on the photo on the right.

Blog Postings will be limited for the next 6 months.

I have become part of a photo grant project for the next 6 months. It will take a lot of time so my weekly postings of "X Marks the Shot" will be limited. I will try to post "Weekend Flash Back"
every week. Please take some time and look back into five years of postings from around Colorado.
