ISO - 4000
Shutter - 1/30 sec.
F/stop - 8
Lens - 500 mm

Challenge.
I wanted to get a photo of Mile High Stadium at night, during a football game. I had noticed how the stadium glowed, now I wanted to capture that image.

Solution.
I decided to go to the foothills, west of Denver, this would would give me a clean shot of Denver and the stadium. From this distance, the only lens that would work would be my 500 mm. Now I also knew that a full moon would be coming up a little after sunset. I picked a location, trying to line up the moon with the stadium, but I was off. The photo turned out ok but not good enough. After missing that opportunity, I found another location on Look Out Mountain. This was real nice, the glowing stadium was right in front of downtown Denver and Colfax Blvd was all lit up, off to the right. Again, my 500 was the only glass that would work.  I needed a f/stop of at least f.8, to have enough depth of field to get the stadium and city in focus. There was some wind, so a long time exposure, using the 500, was out. Setting my ISO to 4000 gave me a shutter speed that would work. My camera can handle high ISO settings, making this shot possible.

Views From Loveland Pass, Continental Divide, Colorado.

"X Shot" information.
Camera - Canon EOS 5D Mark II
ISO - 2000
F/stop - 16
Shutter - 25 sec
Lens - 70/200 zoom
Note - tripod and a cable release were used for this shot.

Challenge.
I went to Loveland Pass around 4 pm, just in time to catch some sunset photos. The moon, almost full, would be coming up soon, making the snow covered mountains glow. My goal was to do some scenic,
moonlit, photos.

Solution.
Using a tripod and a cable release, I set myself up, above Loveland Basin ski area. As it got dark, the lights from  I-70's approach to the Eisenhower Tunnel started to glow. I figured out my light exposure and started to take shots. As a semi-truck approached, right in front of me, I pushed my cable release, starting my shot. The truck came and went, during those 25 seconds. Its lights streaked through my image.

Once I found the right exposure for the moonlit shot, the rest of the shots were the same, making it easy to capture more images.

Denver, Colorado, Last Shot at Fall Colors.

"X Shot" information.
Camera - EOS 5D Mark II
ISO - 200
Shutter - 1/8000 sec.
F/stop - 2.8
Lens - 70/200 zoom

Challenge.
The fall colors, in Denver, where almost at their end. I wanted to go back down there and try to get a shot that would show, the end of fall.

Solution.
I went to Washington and Cheeseman Parks, these two were not part of last weeks blog, so it was all new to me. Both locations were real nice! A lot of trees were bare, but one or two still had nice color, leaves were all over the ground, and the light was nice. I decided to look for my "X Shot" from something on the ground, but always shooting anything else that caught my eye. It was a little windy and I noticed some leaves stuck on a fence. They were backlit and looked real nice. This turned out to be the image I was looking for. The two things that made this shot work were, shooting it at f/stop 2.8, minimum depth of field and the backlit light. Focusing on the fence, the background is lost, making my subject stand out nicely.

Lens - 70/200 zoom.

Challenge.
The fall colors have left the mountains and most of the foothills, so it was time to take the search down the hill. Seeking out good color and locations, down in Denver, would be my goal.

Solution.
I have spent  a lot of time in this area, when I was a photographer for the Rocky Mountain News, so my search was pretty easy. City parks and Open Space, are usually a good bet. Nice trees, maybe water and rocks, all help. The best thing to do is take your time and really look at the location, foreground and background and then compose you photo. There is still some nice color in the Front Range, if you want to shoot some nice pics.
